About This Lesson
Pollinators play a huge role in our ecosystems and sustaining life, and insect pollinators specifically are responsible for pollinating up to 75% of the world’s crops (O’Brien, 2016). Over the past few decades, however, insect pollinator populations have been declining, in no small part due to urbanization (O’Brien, 2016), among other human actions. Though our actions have created this problem, we also have the power to positively impact these populations in many ways.
This lesson plan is intended for 5th and 6th grade and covers a basic overview of how pollination works, why it's important, and how our actions as a species have an impact on that process. Included is a PowerPoint class lesson, activity ideas, and discussion questions.
