About This Lesson

IF by Rudyard Kipling is a wonderful poem. This poem was my Mother's favorite poem written by my Dad's favorite poet. It is a beautiful concept of a Dad setting to verse for his son his best advice. The parallels to Between the World and Me byTa-Nehisi Coates would be a powerful exploration. I could also see this as a spring board for student writing their own advice to their child's or channeling what they think their Father's advice to them would be as they launch to adulthood.

This Notebook is beautifully done visually and graphically. This notebook is a great way to systematically allow students to work through a poem on their own. There are extension items..

I included three versions of the poem recited. I love the voice of all three.  Kevin Spacey, John Hurt and Dennis Hopper on Johnny Cash Show.

Enjoy!
