About This Lesson
Who was King Tut? where was King Tut buried? When was his tomb discovered, and why is it attracting extra attention today?
This King Tutankhamun lesson plan explores the discovery of his tomb by Howard Carter in 1922 and examines how colonialism influenced the excavation, appropriation, and interpretation of ancient artifacts. Students will evaluate the ethical implications of historical artifact removal and discuss the contemporary issue of repatriating cultural items. There is also an option extension activity that has students research an ancient item or collection currently held by a museum outside its country of origin that is the subject of repatriation debates.
