About This Lesson

Please note that all slides and worksheets are linked on the lesson plan attached below!

Students will begin by building knowledge with their peers on the historical context of Japanese Internment through the Foundations and Future's online textbook. The Foundations and Future's online textbook follows the story of Masuo Yasui, a leader of the Portland, Oregon Japanese American community prior to World War II. Students will read excerpts of short stories, and a graphic novel by George Takei. All of the stories use different literary and artistic techniques to convey themes. The students will focus on plot, characterization, image high angle/low angle, image wide shot/medium shot, shading, and dialogue. As a class, students will discuss the effectiveness of those devices and select the devices they believe were used best. By the end of the unit, students will collaborate as a class to create a graphic novel that illustrates the legacy of Japanese Internment.
