About This Lesson
Light Up Ember is a problem-based learning unit with subject area integration of reading, writing, and science. Students in grade 5 will read the book, City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau, a story about a post-apocalyptic underground city. After learning of the significant energy crisis the characters in the book are facing, students are challenged to help solve the problem by applying their understanding of electricity and circuits to develop a working flashlight that can be smuggled secretly down to the people of Ember. Writing will be incorporated as students create an instruction manual to accompany their flashlight prototype.
