About This Lesson

In this experiment, students will be able to visualize sound vibrations from speakers by building a portable eardrum model. Students will be able to explore sound waves, amplitude, frequency (Hertz), resonance, natural frequencies, vibration, and sound transmission through multiple mediums using their eardrum model. An extension is provided to measure the natural frequencies of their model eardrum using a mobile phone and tone-generating app. An engaging application of sound wave resonance, in the form of Chladni plates, is presented in a short Science Friday video.
