About This Lesson

By detecting natural magnetic fields around them, animals like pigeons and sea turtles are able to identify their location and navigate to a familiar place, a behavior called magnetic homing. How can you navigate like a sea turtle? Find out by making a play dough turtle that can detect magnetic fields, creating your own magnetic map, and playing a game to find your turtle’s nesting habitat. As students make their turtles, they can listen to how one young scientist figured out how sea turtles use magnetism to find their natal habitat.
