About This Lesson
Length: 8 WeeksFormat: Project-based, hands-on, and inquiry-driven
Course Overview
This comprehensive 8-week marine biology curriculum introduces students to ocean science through interactive, experiential learning. Students will investigate marine ecosystems, explore ocean currents, examine species adaptations, and engage in discussions and debates on conservation issues. Lessons are designed to build ecological literacy, critical thinking, and science communication skills while fostering a deep appreciation for marine life.
Standards Alignment
The curriculum is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and supports the following performance expectations:
Middle School (Grades 6–8):
- MS-LS2-1: Analyze and interpret data on resource availability and its effect on organisms.
- MS-LS2-2: Predict patterns of interaction in ecosystems.
- MS-LS2-3: Model matter cycling and energy flow in ecosystems.
- MS-ESS3-3: Design solutions to reduce human impact on the environment.
- MS-PS1-2: Interpret changes in matter related to physical properties (applied to saltwater density experiments).
High School (Grades 9–10):
- HS-LS2-4: Use mathematical models to represent energy flow and matter cycling.
- HS-ESS3-1: Explain human impact on Earth’s systems.
- HS-LS4-6: Revise simulations to test solutions for reducing biodiversity loss.
Learning Objectives
Students will:
- Build physical and digital models of coral reefs, food webs, and ocean currents
- Investigate salinity and temperature in relation to ocean circulation
- Analyze adaptations of marine organisms in diverse environments
- Explore human impacts such as pollution, climate change, and overfishing
- Participate in debates, simulations, and conservation campaigns
Instructional Benefits
- Ready-to-implement with detailed instructions, materials lists, and assessments
- Engaging for a range of learning styles: visual, kinesthetic, auditory, and collaborative
- Suitable for traditional classrooms, homeschool settings, and enrichment programs
- Promotes environmental awareness and scientific inquiry
