About This Lesson

This animation sequence from A PLACE IN THE MIDDLE explains traditional Hawaiian gender roles and the respect given to māhū, those who are in the middle between male and female. An interactive map provides other examples of gender diverse cultures around the world. The lesson provides an opportunity for students to learn about a culture where gender diversity is embraced, and to think critically about the social construction of identity.
