About This Lesson

As I was trying to find a map showing mercantilism between Britain and its 13 American colonies, I noticed something - every map showed that rum was imported to Africa, but none showed that European and Americans ALSO imported rum. And most maps showed that rum was the ONLY product imported into Africa. So there an inadvertent message in these maps that Africans were selling slaves for liquor. That didn't seem right. So I made this handout for students to use a primary source of all the imports and exports of the American colonies in 1720 to fill in a map of the Atlantic world with trade routes (but no labels) and a T-chart of imports and exports.
