About This Lesson

Carlos Fuentes is one of Mexico's most famous 20th century writers of the Spanish-speaking world, and was a long-standing critic of the nation's PRI party. Fuentes spent the 1979-80 academic year teaching at Princeton. While he was visiting the University of Notre Dame, he talked with Professor José Anadón and Anadón’s students. Here is an excerpt from that discussion, from WORLDVIEW magazine, September 1980. Fuentes' response has been modified for the classroom.

In the excerpt, Fuentes is asked if Mexican society is presently [in 1980] ruled by an elite class. His insights into the PRI party are interesting as he was speaking in the midst of PRI's 71-year rule, which lasted from 1929-2000.
