This activity models an archaeological survey (students in the UK might have seen in TV programs such as Time Team).
If your pupils like 'Time Team' they will want to do 'geophys'. This describes a simple model of a field (would take some construction, especially if you make wood frames, etc). Could be used in lots of situations, or cross curricular.
