I found this very helpful, but didn't emphasise 'add a zero', we talked about how the numbers were moved across the columns and zero was used to 'hold them in place', - a place-holder. Children also made a 2 row table with column headings (U, T, H etc and, for some, 1/10 (tenths) etc) and then used an clear strip (laminating trims!) to write numbers on, so that they could move them across the columns....helps with multiplying and dividing, and when decimals/money involved.
