About This Lesson

In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, a rise in anti-Muslim sentiment spread across the country. Use this lesson plan to explore the question: How did attitudes towards Muslim-Americans -- or those perceived to be Muslim -- change after 9/11?

In this lesson, which is part 1 of a 3 part lesson series, students will:

  • Examine the concept of identity and stereotypes.
  • Investigate causes of the rise of anti-Muslim sentiment after 9/11.
  • Be introduced to multiple perspectives about Islam and terrorism, including voices from within the Muslim community.
  • Understand the different between Islam and Islamist extremism.

Lesson plans include interactive images, videos, and links, that are best viewed directly from our website using the link in the resources tab.

This resource appears in Module 6 of our 9/11 Primer.
