About This Lesson
In this piece, Maxine Hong Kingston explores the themes of silence and voice along with growing up Chinese-American through the technique of a talk-story. The narrator uses past tragic familial events to serve as a cautionary tale, but also as a way to deal with the dichotomy of growing up in America in an immigrant family. A close read of No Name Woman is necessary in order to determine which events in the piece are real and which events are fantastic.
