About This Lesson
A PLACE IN THE MIDDLE is the true story of an eleven year old Hawaiian girl who dreams of leading the hula troupe at her inner-city Honolulu school. This award-winning short film, together with the classroom discussion guide and online resources, provide an opportunity for students to think and talk about the values of diversity and inclusion, the power of knowing your heritage, and how to create a school climate of aloha – from their own point of view!

I have not taught the lesson yet, but I am excited to use the lesson in my 8th grade ESL/ELAR classrooms. After visiting the Big Island the last five years to assist me in making my decision to retire on the Island, I have learned so much about the Islands, their history, their culture and present day routines, and the many unique problems of the Hawaiians. This will be a great lesson to share my learning with my students. Thank you so much for the time and energy you have all put into sharing this lesson!
