Place Value Chart featuring the Ones Column

Subject MathThe Number System
Grade Level Grades 4-6
Resource Type Handout

About This Lesson

The introduction of Decimal Values is a good time to show that the Ones column is the foundation of the numbering system. The Place Value chart is symmetrical around this column - not the Decimal Point. Emphasizing the Ones column helps address this common mistake (the 'oneths' place, etc.)

Most place value diagrams emphasize the decimal point or have no emphasis.  Ones are the Unit Value.  It's what we count.  It 'uses' the other columns to count its value.

(The Ones are not labeled whole numbers to emphasize the symmetry of Place Value.)

-----

The second handout leverages what the student knows about place value and fractions to explain the Tenths Place.
