About This Lesson

This activity has students imagine they are 5 different roles during the early 1500s who are connected to Martin Luther in some way. They must decide what his punishment should be and then try to convince a student playing the role of Pope Leo X to enact this punishment.

I have been using this lesson

I have been using this lesson for years. The lesson engages the student's ability to judge, discuss, and debate their position on what should happen to Martin Luther and why

Totally love this lesson and

Totally love this lesson and using it tomorrow. I am changing it up a little bit by creating role cards for each character. I will hand this to them at the beginning of class (it has the title on the front and the description on the back). Next, they will read the description on the back of their card (when prompted) and contemplate the actions they will take on Martin Luther. Then, I will have each student gather into homogeneous groups based off of their characters to decide on the proper action (collaboration and communication). These groups may be rather large, so you can break them into smaller groups of three (still with the same character). After they have had sufficient discussion time, each group will reveal the consequence they decided upon in a larger group discussion. These can be written on the board, so every student can participate in a large group "jigsaw". I only have about 35 minutes each class period to teach, so this will be a very quick lesson. I love how you can modify to fit your classroom :)

Wonderful idea. I can't wait

Wonderful idea. I can't wait to try this with 6th graders. I like putting the "Social" in social studies, and this helps them identify different sides of the story.
