About This Lesson

This article starts with the Geneva Convention definition of a war crime and then has the International Criminal Court definition of crimes against humanity. Students must read the article about the Rape of Nanking and while reading, annotate anytime they read something that could be considered a war crime, a crime against humanity, or both. When finished, there are two questions: 1) Should the Rape of Nanking be considered a war crime or crime against humanity? and 2) Should the US have gotten involved in 1937 to stop the Japanese Army?
