About This Lesson

Students will critically examine and discuss the image of the Altar Screen. An altar screen is called a retablo (literally, behind the table or altar) and individual paintings are also called retablos. The images painted on retablos are called santos, or holy images. They are depictions of saints as More… well as the Christ Child and the Virgin Mary. Students will learn about and “read” the stories told by the visual images, then work collaboratively using literary elements to write the story portrayed in one of the retablos.

This would take at least four or five days, which is not appropriate for what would be gained.

Religious nature of art may not be appropriate. The lesson is also better suited to high school than middle school, and the ELA relevance is unclear.
