About This Lesson

Education research suggests that the key to math success is learning basic math skills early. Ben Clarke, PhD, an Associate Professor at the University of Oregon, studied an early math intervention called ROOTS, which focuses on helping kindergarteners develop an understanding of whole numbers, counting cardinality, and place value. The study found that students in the intervention did better on math tests than their peers in the control group. The scientists say parents can boost children's math skills at home by having kids measure ingredients for a recipe or use blocks to promote spatial thinking.
