About This Lesson

This lesson revolves around Sherman Alexie’s poignant yet humorous and accessible essay, “I Hated Tonto (Still Do).” It explores the negative impact that stereotypes can have on individuals. The reading is supported by a short video montage of clips from Western films. The clips offer students the opportunity to evaluate primary sources for bias and bigotry, as well as providing context for the protagonists’ experiences in the essay. Aligned to CCSS: SL.9-10.1, RI.9-10.2, RI.9-10.3, RI.9-10.7

The lesson plan is great but the article associated with it is NOT appropriate for 6-10 grades. I'm so glad that I did not totally trust "Teaching Tolerance" on this one. I would have been in a lot of hot water with my students parents and administrator over the sexual innuendos in the article. I emailed Teaching Tolerance and voiced my frustration. I completed the lesson without the article....too sexual.

This is soooo wrong! I loved

This is soooo wrong! I loved Tonto and his positive image of a caring, helpful and law-abiding individual. He also was part of the team the Lone Ranger and Tonto! His horse was beautiful too. I had a stretchy man of Tonto loved that.
