About This Lesson

This lesson introduces students to the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female unit deployed overseas during World War II. Known as the “Six Triple Eight,” these courageous women served in the face of both racial segregation and gender discrimination, working tirelessly to clear a massive backlog of mail and boost the morale of American troops. Students will explore how the 6888th's service challenged stereotypes, demonstrated excellence under pressure, and paved the way for greater inclusion in the U.S. military. The lesson includes a video and worksheet designed to foster critical thinking and historical analysis.
