About This Lesson
Teach about the life of exiles, refugees and displaced persons with The Cup! It's a great lesson to introduce students to the Dalai Lama and teach about empathy and human rights.
This lesson explores the essential question explores the experience of refugees and the world response to refugee situations. It starts with the particular case of the Tibetan people, but then expands to explore the conditions of refugees worldwide.
The lesson was designed for use with heartwarming feature film The Cup (students really love it!) and can also be used on its own without the film. The film's writer/director Khyentse Norbu was a child refugee and is an ordained Tibetan Buddhist monk, which makes The Cup a powerfully authentic "Own Voices" story.
This lesson features four class activities, plus extension activities and additional resources.
The lesson also includes handouts and worksheet.More lesson plans for the film The Cup, about two refugee boys who arrive at a monastery desperate to find a way to watch the World Cup, is available through Journeys In Film to help you teach with this film across the curriculum.
