This bill proposes to grant permanent resident status to DACA recipients.
This lesson gives students a chance to weigh in on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, a program designed to grant approved immigrants temporary permission to live and work in the United States. The DACA program was enacted by the Obama administration in 2012. In 2017, the Trump administration took steps to end the program by disallowing new applicants and charged lawmakers with passing a bill to continue the program. No new legislation has been passed and further efforts to end the program have been put on hold, leaving the program in limbo.
One solution was proposed by the DREAM Act of 2017, which grants permanent residency status to DACA recipients. Can students pass a bill on this divisive issue, or will they meet the same roadblocks as our lawmakers?
