About This Lesson

Explore intellectual property protections through a bill that seeks to regulate patent infringement litigation.

This lesson looks at the balance of innovation and the protection of intellectual property rights with the PATENT Act of 2015. The PATENT Act aims to make it more difficult and expensive for companies to take advantage of current patent law and file frivolous lawsuits.

The PATENT Act presents an opportunity to think about intellectual property in a world of fast-developing technology. Students are asked to consider what constitutes a fair protection for new and innovative ideas and ways in which the abuse of such regulations can be addressed.

Use this lesson plan to explore the issue and prepare to conduct a Senate debate on a related bill.
