About This Lesson

Vultures fill a critical role in India’s urban food web as scavengers, feeding on dead animals or discarded prey. In this lesson, students examine the role of vultures, explore the link between the vulture’s niche and human health in India, and then participate in a Socratic Seminar to extend what they’ve learned about niche and niche replacement to other species. Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core, this lesson is part of curriculum related to the PBS series Earth A New Wild and was developed in collaboration with PBS LearningMedia.

Keywords: scavenger, decomposer, niche, biotic, abiotic, trophic level, Colony Collapse Disorder,
