About This Lesson

Next Vista for Learning is working with CAL FIRE to help students become better prepared for and educated about wildfires.  These materials use digital video in ways that can make learning more active and engaging, and at the same time help produce materials that address the threats wildfire poses.

Using these materials, students learn and also teach others by creating a video on what wildfires are, why they do what they do, how to prevent them, and what to do if your community is threatened by one.

Start by having the students watch some of the videos in our library of prompts that can be found here:  https://www.nextvista.org/projects/wildfire/video_prompts.phtml

The video prompts are designed to help students better understand the science of, prevention of, and preparation for wildfires. Engage students in the powerful active learning of creating their own videos. Students choose a video to “interpret,” then create a video with the same information, but in a way that they think is even more interesting for people their age.  Contact Next Vista to add your videos to a global video library that will help others learn about wildfire prevention.  Students can view other student-made videos here:  https://www.nextvista.org/tag/wildfire/
