About This Lesson

Students use the amino acid alphabet to write their names as polypeptides.  This activity gives them a feel for what a side chain is, how amino acids are linked and why such a huge variety of proteins is possible using only 20 “letters”.

Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism.
