About This Lesson
Macbeth, early on, finds himself tempted by three witches who foretell a great destiny for Macbeth. Although initially, Macbeth is quick to dismiss these prophesies, he soon finds himself contemplating if he could change fate and become that in which the witches have prophesized. This decision leads to his downfall, as only his death will put nature and the world back into balance. In this assignment, students will use textual evidence from the play and a non-fiction source to argue the position that superstitious behavior is caused by a person wanting to control fate.
