About This Lesson

This is a post reading activity for Macbeth allowing students to look at a different perspective on the traditional understanding of the play. Historically speaking, it is accepted knowledge that Macbeth was responsible for killing King Duncan and instrumental in killing his friend Banquo. But what if this wasn’t the case? What if someone else was responsible and for centuries the literary world has gotten it wrong? The following short story by James Thurber explores the idea that maybe….just maybe, Macbeth was not the murderer. What if Macbeth could be viewed as a detective story?
