About This Lesson

On 9/11, many ordinary people acted with extraordinary bravery in order to help themselves and those around them.  One of those individuals was a 24-year-old man named Welles Remy Crowther. Use the attached lesson plan to explore the questions:

  • What happened on 9/11?
  • Why is it important to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11?
  • How do artifacts and other primary sources tell stories about 9/11?

In this lesson, students will:

  • Become familiar with the World Trade Center and the Twin Towers before 9/11.
  • Understand what happened on 9/11 and during its aftermath.
  • Articulate why they think commemorating and remembering 9/11 is important.

To learn more about Welles and the heroism he showed on 9/11, listen to his mother, Allison Crowther, share his story here.

A wonderful lesson making the

A wonderful lesson making the events of 9/11 more personal for the students. It showed them that you don't have to have great strength or intelligence to be a hero. You just have to have compassion for those around you that might need help.
