About This Lesson
Students use the Bohr model to make diagrams of the first 18 elements, and use them to discover patterns in the periodic table. I find that this activity makes it easier for students to grasp simple Lewis structures, to recognize the difference between ionic and covalent bonds and to understand why chemical families have similar chemical properties.
I use "Atomic Structure" and "Constructing PT-entry" to make sure the students have a reasonably solid understanding of basic atomic structure. I also include both blank and completed atom diagrams.
The overview contains a lesson plan for both online and paper versions of the assignment.
