About This Lesson

In the weeks and months following the 9/11 attacks, people often turned to artwork as a way to express their feelings and make meaning of their grief. Use this lesson plan to explore the question:  How can art convey meaning in the immediate aftermath of a tragic event?

In this lesson, students will:

  • Analyze and interpret the cover of the issue of The New Yorker  magazine published immediately following 9/11.
  • Consider different perspectives of covering a tragic event and evaluate the decision made by The New Yorker after 9/11.

Lesson plans include interactive images, videos, and links, that are best viewed directly from our website using the link in the resources tab.
