About This Lesson

This 90 minute lesson addresses the SEL Competencies of Respect for Others and Situation Analysis to promote empathy for the character of Abigail Williams in the play The Crucible.  Students will imagine that the play is set today when texting is a communication tool. They will write a two page script to explain the character’s motivation to behave as she does; while doing so, they will explore the Double Standard and Name-Calling as it relates to gender roles. The lesson is aligned to the Common Core Standards for ELA and to the Ohio State Content Standards for ELA.
