About This Lesson

In this 90 minute lesson, students will develop SEL skills such as self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness while learning about the Federal Reserve and assessing its use of monetary tools. This lesson opens with students completing a vocabulary exercise. Next, students will read about the Federal Reserve and monetary tools. Students will then be divided into small groups, each of which will be assigned one of six monetary tools. Each group will create a poster and write a review question about their assigned tool. All students will participate in a gallery walk during which they will read and engage with their classmates’ posters. After the gallery walk, there will be a whole class discussion during which each group will present the answer to their poster’s review question. At the end of class, students will individually complete a reflection on their participation in the gallery walk and poster collaboration, as well as an exit slip assessing their vocabulary acquisition. Answer keys for all activities are included.  This lesson is aligned to the Common Core Standards for History/Social Studies and the Ohio State Content Standards for American Government.
