About This Lesson

In this lesson, students will build SEL skills such as social awareness and relationship skills by writing and performing skits about the development of public policy. Students will engage in a Do Now activity to learn about public policy and activate prior knowledge about the three branches of government. Students will then be divided into small groups. Each group will be given different prompt from which to write a skit about public policy. Students will perform their skits for the rest of the class, who will provide feedback using an audience handout. At the end of class, students will reflect on their participation in small group work and their skit performance. Answer keys for all activities are included.  This lesson is aligned to the Common Core Standards for History/Social Studies and the Ohio State Content Standards for American Government. This lesson can be taught as one 90 minute lesson or two 45 minute lessons.
