About This Lesson

A week-long high school American History lesson rooted in primary documents, with the goal of helping students better understand the causez of the Civil War and President Lincoln’s philosophy attendant to the beginning of the war.  Students will study Lincoln’s 1st Inaugural Address, then in an effort to continue our exploration of the causes of the Civil War and the southern point of view they will study Confederate Vice President Stephens' Cornerstone Address.  Students will then evaluate and compare both speeches, developing close reading and textual & historical analysis skills.
