About This Lesson
In this 90 minute lesson, students will develop social and interpersonal SEL skills, while demonstrating an understanding of what judicial review is, and how the process works. Students will begin with an entertaining video of the landmark Supreme Court decision Marbury v. Madison, which established judicial review. Students will have the opportunity to work cooperatively with classmates to review a current event from the Daily News that is relevant to judicial review. The students will present what they learned in written, verbal, and visual formats. They will use graphic organizers and guides that are included to assist in completing the presentation. Students will rate their work with included SEL and group evaluation rubrics. The lesson will include an exit ticket about the three branches of government, and how they check each other to assess student understanding. This lesson is aligned to the Common Core Standards for History/Social Studies and the Ohio State Standards for American Government.
