About This Lesson

Students will read a poem at least three times and complete a line-by-line analysis of it for language techniques, figurative language, and the narrative techniques the author uses. Students will write a narrative poem using language techniques discussed in class. Each person will have his/her poem edited by a classmate. Students will then be assessed on their ability to incorporate the language techniques and figurative language discussed in No Name Woman by Maxine Hong Kingston and Facing It by Yusef Komunyakaa in their own writing sample.
