About This Lesson

ART/SOCIAL STUDIES – Read an excerpt from his book American Notes detailing his account of the journey. In 1842, he travelled to America on board Cunard Line’s first paddle-steamer, the Britannia. It left New Year’s Day from Liverpool and arrived in Boston 21 days later.

Learning Objectives

  • Social Studies – learn from a first hand experience the difficulties of traveling by steamship in 1842 and answer questions about travel and class differences. Students can learn more about differing classes here.
  • Art – students will learn one point perspective or book binding techniques.

Art Project Options

  • One Point Perspective Cabin: students will use one point perspective to create their own imaginative ship cabin 
  • First Person Diary: students learn simple bookbinding techniques to create their own “diary” with illustrations and accounts of their trip across the Atlantic like Dickens
