About This Lesson
In this 90-minute lesson, students will continue to develop social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships by reading “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and participating in small group and whole class discussions. At the beginning of the lesson students will have the opportunity to reflect and discuss this quote, “Our desire to conform is greater than our respect for facts.” The four corners strategy is used as a vehicle in this lesson to guide student responses and assist in appreciating different student perspectives on the issue before the story is read, and the effective discussion report card will guide students’ participation after the story is read. The lesson is concluded with an analysis of the story. This lesson is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for the 11-12th grade band.
