About This Lesson

This four class period documents-based lesson will help students explore and understand South Carolina's reasons for seceding from the Union in 1860, as well as the greater topic of secession in the wake of Abraham Lincoln's election. Using a variety of original documents, students will be able to explain and analyze the justifications - constitutional, legal, and moral - that Southern leaders used to support their drastic moves.

Provided as part of TAH.org's American History Toolkits project.
