About This Lesson

In this 90-minute lesson, students will have the opportunity to analyze and discuss decision-making skills and responsible behaviors through the short story, “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant.  The lesson begins with students participating in three quick writes around the topics of selfishness, loyalty, and obligation.  After sharing and listening to other student perspectives, the story is read and a class discussion is held.  The discussion begins with polling students on how much sympathy they hold for the main character and continues based on their emotional reaction at different points in the story.  The lesson concludes with students revisiting their quick writes and reassessing the terms, selfishness, loyalty, and obligation in context of the actions of the main character.  This lesson is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for the 11-12th grade band.
