About This Lesson
An "Orange in Winter" is the story of a friendship between Jewish teenager,Walter Less and his non-Jewish friend, Hans at the beginning of the Holocaust in Lüneburg, Germany. Later, Walter and his family flee to the US, while Hans joins the Hitler Youth, following the steps of German teenagers during the Nazi era. Students can learn the growing disillusionment with the Nazi regime of how and why such terrible historical events developed. Author, Margaret McQuillan, wrote this fictionalized story based on the true experiences of her father, Walter Less, who grew up in Lüneburg in the 1930s. All he witnesses and experiences is based on authentic data and primary source descriptions. Its short length and simple language make it eminently readable independently or as a curriculum resource for upper elementary students through adults. Enhanced by a detailed timeline, documents, photographs, a glossary, and a study guide, the book personalizes the insidious evolution of the Nazi regime and the profound and powerful impact it has on the two boys. The book was published jointly by McQuillan and the History Workshop in Lueneburg. Ms. Mcquillan can be contacted at: mal5mcqgmail.com
