About This Lesson
This unit is comprised of eight, 80-90 minute lesson plans that incorporate all three strands of social emotional learning as defined by the Cleveland Metropolitan School District . Each strand consists of multiple competencies of which many are incorporated into the originally designed activities.
This unit covers the American Government standards relating to the topic of ‘Basic Principles of the United States Constitution’ (content statements: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13) as outlined by the Ohio Department of Education.
The content statements relate specifically to the following concepts:

The Federalist and Antifederalist Papers

The Bill of Rights and the debate over its ratification

The Reconstruction Era Amendments (13, 14, and 15)

The Progressive Era Amendments (16, 17, 18, and 19)

Amendments relating to suffrage for disenfranchised groups (15, 19, 24, and 26)

Amendments that have altered provisions of the executive branch (12, 20, 22, 23, and 25)

Amendments that have addressed unique historical circumstances (11, 21, and 27)
The lessons and activities within this unit will require a significant amount of reading, research, and collaborative work between students and student groups.
