      About This Lesson

      These building tolerance lessons asks students to look not just at the events of 9/11 but at the following days and years. Students explore the parts of a newspaper, the functions of a news article, and the importance of a free press in a democratic society. Classroom activities prompt students to discuss the need for and role of heroes. Students learn how to identify unifying factors in a diverse society, distinguish between fact and opinion, examine different points of view, analyze legal issues that have arisen as a result of the terrorist attacks, and more.

      Excellent lesson for teaching about 9/11 and the days and years following. Includes objectives, key terms, ideas for discussion, websites and several lessons.

      Very helpful materials for teaching about 9/11. As an additional resource, teachers may want to read my children's book "Sirius, The Hero Dog of 9/11" to their classes. This book has been an integral part of the state-wide 9/11 Education curriculum (grades 4 through 9) of the New Jersey Department of Education since 2009. The complete 32-page book, including 25 child-friendly photographs, appears under my name, Hank Fellows, on my "Share My Lesson" page on this website. A song about "Sirius," as well as three lessons plans also appear on my webpage.
