About This Lesson

This lesson begins with a warm-up that engages students with present day scenarios that are provocative or unfair, but were common place in ancient times. Students should understand that principles behind the government we have today are based on a government created long ago in Athens. Through the launch, students learn about the four major forms of government practiced in ancient Athens. Students then have an opportunity to apply their knowledge by identifying the forms of government through historically accounts of what happened and learn about how direct democracy was developed.
