About This Lesson

In this 90-minute lesson, students will work on SEL skills that include demonstrating self-awareness, self-management, and responsible decision-making.  The teacher will act as a facilitator to guide students through a difficult text - Sonnet 76 by William Shakespeare.  The lesson begins with a quick write asking students to reflect on their reading process when they encounter a difficult text.  This will lead into a brainstorming session on strategies to use when dealing with a difficult text that students will apply to comprehending the sonnet.  The lesson concludes with students writing a summary of the poem.  This lesson is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for the 11-12th grade band.
