About This Lesson
Use the following simulation from CFR Education to spark discussion and help students to think through what they would do if they were decision-makers.
Learning Goal
- Students will understand that climate change is melting Arctic sea ice, making the region more accessible and creating new opportunities and risks for trade and national security.
- Students will understand that some countries, particularly China and Russia, are already investing in the Arctic for economic and strategic purposes.
The Situation
As melting sea ice opens the Arctic for navigation and resource extraction, new opportunities and obstacles are emerging for countries that border the region. The United States needs to determine whether it should launch a new Arctic policy and, if so, what interests it should prioritize in the region.
